About
Growing up in the typical West Indian family, in the nineteen seventies and eighteens, my religious background was shaped by the Anglican Church, which together with the Roman Catholics, dominated the lives of so many of the islands that make up the Caribbean Archepelego. It was with great pride, that our mother would stand at the corner looking on as her three children marched on to church. Little did my mother knew that her only son, never made to many of the church services, the lure of young men playing football, in the nearby savanna, was too much for me to resist.
This all changed, however, when a neighbor introduced my mother to the Nicheren Daishoshin Buddhism. With unbridled passion, she embraced this eastern religion and forced her children to endure the smoked filled rooms created by the never ending burning of incense and the irritating ringing of bells. It is obvious that I never liked the practice but this time, there was no nearby savanna to escape to. In hindsight, I could appreciate the wisdom of God as I could now discern the subtle deceptions of New Age and Esoteric beliefs.
In 1986, I met Sharon Jordan who would later become my wife. This would prove to be significant because 5 years later, Sharon met our present Pastor, Kenneth Adams and became an active member of a full gospel church. It took me 7 years to follow.
The break away from traditional thinking would occur in 2000, and from thence, there was no hesitation in accepting that we are sons of God. It was like someone who was born without sight, finally seeing. Being a son of God, puts you in a position to know why you are here, your purpose and your destiny. Life takes on a renewed significance. Now everything is about ABBA, my heavenly Father. Now everything is about fulfilling the will of God, on the earth, as it is in heaven. The void created by the Anglican, Buddhist and religious experience is now more than adequately filled by the intimate relationship between Father and son.
